Unconquered People is a body of work that brings attention to discourse associated with histories of the African diaspora, Blackness in America, and the spirituality of nature. It highlights the resilience of past generations and illustrates the historical contributions Black people have made to western culture specifically in art and music.
Unconquered People combines temporary and permanent installations through a variety of work that includes video, sculpture, found objects and photographs; all touching on the ideas of picturing freedom and meditation on the histories of the African diaspora.
In the single channel video, Unconquered People (2022), two characters emerge in the same location, never meeting throughout the duration of the film. One character attempts to navigate the field while the other character plays a trumpet in contemplation - his tune serving as the score of the film. Tension builds in moments where they both seem to rest. Field recordings of environmental sounds are layered with the blaring trumpet. Both characters existing within and escaping from the Anthropocene. Recalling History (2022), is a sculpture depicting two bindles cast in bronze as a permanent installation. The objects symbolize the journeys of past enslaved people, and runaway slaves.
